Hyperion Will Sell Its Backlist to Focus on Books Linked to Television Properties

Hyperion Books - peoplewhowritePublisher Hyperion Books plans to shed its old titles and focus on books attached to TV properties. The Wall Street Journal reports, “The decision means that Hyperion is migrating away from the traditional book-publishing model of actively competing with other publishers for new titles.” Backlist titles once represented the “backbone” of the book industry, but with publishers struggling to adjust to a new business model that includes competition from digital behemoth Amazon, even as copyright laws and acts and laws pose new challenges for publishers.

So what will this shift in Hyperion’s business model mean for people who write? I would guess that Hyperion’s editors will focus on acquiring titles that have high page-to-screen potential, and authors who already have books that have been adapted for screen or who are repped by agents with television relationships.
