Author Kevin Powers has won the 2013 Hemingway / PEN Award for his debut novel The Yellow Birds. The award grants the winner a $10,000 prize, plus a one-week residency in The Distinguished Visiting Writers Series at the University of Idaho’s MFA Program in Creative Writing.
Inspired by his own experience as a machine-gunner in Iraq, The Yellow Birds chronicles one soldier’s memory and perspective on the campaign to control a northern Iraqi city. “Kevin Powers has something to say,” Benjamin Percy wrote in his New York Times review, “something deeply moving about the frailty of man and the brutality of war, and we should all lean closer and listen.”
Here’s a list of fellowships / awards / prizes you still have time to apply for.
